Approximately 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Police state they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then found multiple other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; officials are presently not aware of any harm in relation with the incident," they commented.
City officials said they were trying "to solve the case" and have asked to the community for details.
A senior representative stated the vandalism left him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a assailant targeting people of foreign heritage in 2020.
